Service and Leadership
Student Leadership at Emmanuel Anglican College
At Emmanuel Anglican College, student leadership is a fundamental part of our Wellbeing Program. We believe that by providing students with structured and supportive opportunities to lead, we are helping to build character, resilience and a sense of community. Our leadership initiatives enrich students’ personal qualities, such as commitment, responsibility and enthusiasm and provide a platform for them to contribute to the growth and improvement of the college.
Diverse Opportunities for All Students
We offer leadership opportunities for both Primary and Secondary students and we are continually looking to broaden our programs in leadership skill development and service learning. Our student leadership positions are filled through a democratic student nomination and voting process, ensuring that our leaders are chosen by their peers to serve the student body.
Key leadership roles include:
- Student Representative Council (SRC): The SRC meets regularly to discuss school issues and plan important events, fundraisers, and functions. Members are charged with the responsibility to build community, take action and serve others.
- House Captains, Sporting Captains, Band Captains and Arts and Culture Captains
- Primary and College Captains
- Service and Spiritual Leadership: Students can lead prayers and readings at year level, stage and College chapel services and particpate in service opportunities including through the Lighthouse Program.
The College’s Duke of Edinburgh Award program provides another avenue for students to develop leadership skills both within the College and the wider community. We are proud of our students’ achievements in this program.
These programs and positions are designed to empower students to take initiative, follow through on projects and become well rounded, compassionate leaders.
Service Learning at Emmanuel Anglican College
At Emmanuel Anglican College, service is at the heart of our mission. As a Christian community, we are called to be socially conscious and compassionate, contributing to the wellbeing of those around us both locally and globally. Through service, our students grow in empathy, build character and develop a deeper understanding of their role in making the world a better place.
The Five Marks of Mission
Our Service Learning programs are inspired by the Anglican Communion’s Five Marks of Mission, which guide our community in living out Christ’s message:
- Witness to Christ’s saving, forgiving and reconciling love for all people
- Build welcoming, transforming communities of faith
- Stand in solidarity with the poor and the needy
- Challenge injustice and oppression
- Protect, care for and renew life on our planet
These principles remind us that we are indeed blessed and that we are called to share our resources, gifts and time with those less fortunate than ourselves.
Service in Action
At Emmanuel Anglican College, service learning is not just about giving; it is about learning through doing. Our programs engage students, families and staff in meaningful opportunities to support others and to reflect on the importance of compassion and justice. Through these experiences, students live out the College values of Courage, Compassion, Citizenship and Creativity:
- Courage to step beyond comfort zones and serve others with humility and confidence
- Compassion in showing kindness and empathy to those in need
- Citizenship in contributing positively to both local and global communities
- Creativity in finding new ways to support, connect and make a difference
Anglican Board of Mission
The College supports the Anglican Board of Mission (ABM) through fundraising and awareness initiatives. Contributions assist in emergency relief and community development projects across the world, helping to transform lives and demonstrate Christ’s love in action.
Toys & Tucker Christmas Appeal
Each year, the College partners with Anglicare to collect gifts, food and household items for families in need through the Toys & Tucker Christmas Appeal. Every year group contributes to this initiative, ensuring that Christmas is a time of hope and joy for all.
Local Charities and Initiatives
Service begins at home. Emmanuel Anglican College students support a range of local charities and community organisations.
Benefits of Service Learning
Service learning provides a powerful foundation for personal and spiritual growth. Students learn to:
- Develop Empathy by engaging with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences
- Build Character through real world challenges and opportunities for resilience
- Foster Responsibility as active, socially responsible citizens
- Strengthen Collaboration by working together to address community needs
Through these experiences, students are encouraged to live out Christ’s teaching in practical, meaningful ways, becoming young people who lead with Courage, Compassion, Citizenship, and Creativity.
Duke of Endinburgh
We are pleased to offer The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (Duke of Ed) at Emmanuel Anglican College. The Award is open to students aged 14 and over and is available to students from Year 9 and above.
The Duke of Ed is a non competitive, self-development program that encourages young people to set and achieve personal goals while building valuable skills such as communication, organisation, decision making, teamwork, confidence and resilience. A key feature of the program is the Adventurous Journey, which challenges students to plan, train for and complete a team expedition in an unfamiliar environment, developing independence, perseverance and a sense of adventure.
The Duke of Ed is internationally recognised and highly regarded by employers, tertiary institutions and scholarship providers. There are three levels of the Award: Bronze, Silver, and Gold, each designed to suit different age groups and stages of development:
- Bronze is targeted at Year 9 students
- Silver is typically undertaken in Year 10
- Gold is intended for students in Years 11 and 12
This progression allows students to build on their experiences and continue developing their capabilities throughout their senior years.
For an overview of the Award’s structure and requirements, please refer to the Duke of Edinburgh Website. Further information, including answers to frequently asked questions, can be found on the website.
We hope your child will take advantage of this opportunity to join the Duke of Ed Program. Information sessions for the following school year take place in Term 4 and students are encouraged to enrol and begin their Award in Term 1.
