Term 2 | Week 3 | 15 May 2019
‘Happy the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God’ Matthew 5:9
From The Principal
Happy Mothers’ Day to all our mums! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed some quality time and special treatment from your family. A huge thank you to the Friends of EAC for coordinating a special morning tea last Friday. The turn out was great and it was lovely see many of our mums and grand mums catching up, having a cuppa and enjoying some of the students performances. Congratulations to Mr Cleverly, Mrs Buddee and the Stage 2 and Stage 3 students who put on a special performance for those present.
Thank you to all our students and staff for all their efforts to bring together a very successful Year 7 2018 Information Evening. The night was extremely well attended by our current Year 6 families as well as a significant number of new families who are considering enrolment at EAC. It was a wonderful showcase of the variety of learning opportunities that are available to students of the College. Our future Year 7s and their families were able to sample some scrumptious morsels from our Hospitality and Food Technology students, undertake the Physical Education fitness challenge, participate in a number of Science experiments, take on the brain teasers and puzzles on offer in Mathematics and enjoy performances from the Rock Ensemble.
One of the highlights of the evening was the ‘hands on’ opportunities for students and parents involving the latest technologies available to support students learning which included Spherobots, Microbits, 3D printing and having a virtual experience using the VR 3D simulator. I was really proud to welcome the new families and have our Secondary Leaders show them around. Those that were new to the College were very impressed with the students, the facilities and the programs on offer but by far the most common compliment was how welcome they felt and how much the students clearly loved their school and enjoyed their learning. That is a great tribute to everyone involved with the College.
It has been a very busy time for the members of our College Band Program who performed at the Parish of St Bart’ Mothers’ day fete. Each time any of our bands performs, I am amazed at the depth of talent and the growth in their confidence and proficiency as musicians. The students clearly are enjoying the opportunity to perform and play together. I wish to congratulate and thank Mr Adam Holmes and Mr Justin Cleverley for the incredible energy they bring to the program and their vision for music and band. I also wish to thank the music tutor team who work with all out buddying musicians and help them build their skill and a love of music. It is an incredible program that continues to provide great outcomes for our students.
Congratulations to Lachlan Walker of Year 10 who this week competed at the NSW All Schools Swimming Carnival, representing EAC as a member of the Combined Independent Schools Swim Squad. Lachlan competed in four events finishing in the top three of each event. He is now the NSW U16 100m Backstroke Champion and has been selected in the NSW team to compete at the Australian Championships later in the term. An outstanding achievement. Congratulations Lachlan!

With NAPLAN commencing this week it is certainly a reminder that we are well and truly into the swing of the term. This term is a reporting term and as such, this will mean that our students are going to have pieces of assessment due over the course of the next month. Assessment can create stress for some students where others seem to sail blissfully through the waters of assessment and the associated demands upon a student’s time and energy. For all of our students, regardless of their age or academic ability it is essential that they do the little things right. In Australian Football these are called 1 percenters and in cycling, marginal gains. Whatever we call them the principles are the same. There are certain dispositions or learning behaviours that students can adopt that will assist them to meet the demands of assessment with their well-being intact. These are as follows:
- Get the required amount of sleep for your age(It is much more than you think)
- Eat well and eat breakfast each day
- Drink plenty of water as the brain functions better when it is hydrated
- Take time out to exercise
- Keep organised and detailed notes and revise in an active manner rather than passively reading notes
- Break large assessment tasks up into smaller manageable chunks
- Set goals for yourself and build in rewards for achieving those goals
- Take a business-like approach to study and assessment
- Keep everything in perspective
It was great to spend time with the Year 10 students at immunisations on Monday morning and the nurses conducting the immunisations were very quick to tell me what a cooperative and well-mannered group our students were. Last Thursday Ms Spring and I accompanied the Year 11 students to The Northern Rivers Careers Expo and almost every student courteously thanked the bus driver when they alighted from the bus upon their return to the college. This was great to hear and the driver was very happy to be thanked in such a polite way. There is an old adage that ‘manners maketh the person’. In a society so dominated by ‘me’ and the individual it is always refreshing to witness good manners and respect for others taking place. However, it takes a combination of home as the initial teacher of values and attitudes, supported by the school reinforcing and expecting this. Together we can develop fine young people who are capable of showing others the necessary respect. Now more than ever, good manners are noticed and despite what some may say not only are they noticed but they are reciprocated by others thus leading to more respectful social interactions thus leading to a more civil society. A pretty noble thing to aspire to I would think.
