‘Happy the merciful: they shall have mercy shown to them’
Matthew 5:7
From the Principal
It has been an incredible start to the term with students involved in a myriad of exciting and fun opportunities including the Year 6 Peer Support Leadership Training Day, College Cross Country, the Tutankhamun Roadshow, CIS swimming and Netball, Year 12 Drama day and HICES Debating. During the non-term time we also had a group of students travel to Italy and Greece as part on an Ancient History field study and our Marine Studies students visited the Lizard Island Research Station and were involved in daily snorkelling trips on the Great Barrier Reef to collect valuable data on behalf of the Research Station. When I list all of these amazing opportunities I am once again reminded of the incredibly talented and generous staff that we are so blessed to have at EAC. They love their work as teachers and regularly go above and beyond to make learning fun, meaningful and engaging.
I also wish to take this opportunity to formally acknowledge and thank the Friends of EAC for their incredible work and support of the College. Each year the Friends of EAC make a wonderful contribution to building community and raising funds to provide additional resources for the benefit of all the students. On Tuesday evening, the Friends of EAC held their Annual General Meeting and took time to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions that the group has made over the last 12 months. Despite the challenges of COVID-19 and the devastating impact of the floods, the work of Friends has continued with much success.
On behalf of the entire EAC community I wish to offer sincere thanks to Jodie Manning-Hayter (President), Vanessa Hansen (Treasurer), Julie Billebault and Vivienne Palmer (who shared the Secretary role), and the extended committee for your amazing efforts throughout the last 12 months. In particular, I wish to acknowledge Jodie’s outstanding leadership of Friends over the last 4 years. Jodie has been incredible in her efforts to keep the Friends of EAC serving our community through both the pandemic and the flood disaster. We have been greatly blessed by her strong leadership, amazing generosity and inspirational ideas. While she steps back from a leadership role, I am sure she will continue to be an active member of Friends and Friends' initiatives in the years ahead.
I would also like to thank Janet Hale, who continues to donate her time so generously in order to keep the Second Hand Uniform Pool operating. It provides a steady stream of income to Friends and is a much-needed service for the families of EAC. Thank you, Janet.
The work of Friends can only continue with the commitment and support of generous, skilled and enthusiastic members. As part of the AGM a new committee are elected and I am so grateful to the following people for stepping up to take an active role in the leadership of Friends:
- President: Steve Carrigg
- Vice President: Vanessa Hansen
- Treasurer: Emma Rippon and Megan Rippon
- Secretary: Julie Billebault
We look forward to another wonderful year of friendship, fun and fundraising!
As you are aware, planning for the construction of the Technology Centre is well under way with the Development Application in the final stages of approval. This facility which is designed on the principles of 'Design Thinking' will facilitate learning in the areas of STEM, Digital Animation, Videography, Coding, Robotics, Sustainability and Construction. To support the development of this centre and to celebrate 25 years of ‘living learning and leading’ at EAC, Friends are planning a ‘Silver Jubilee Celebration' to be held at Shelly Beach Café on Saturday 17 June. It will be a night of glamour, fun, food and friendship and a major fundraising initiative in 2023 seeking to raise $75,000 for special equipment for the Technology Centre. Tickets will be available shortly. Please save this date in your calendar.
As we prepare for construction of the new Centre, this week we have had a new prefabricated building delivered and installed which will be used to house classrooms as some learning spaces become unavailable during the construction process.

EAC STUDENTS MARCH PROUDLY
EAC was proudly represented in the local ANZAC Day marches at both Alstonville and Ballina last week. Student leaders Lara Atkinson and Noah Truman together with Mr Francis McGuigan, EAC's Deputy Principal, participated in the Ballina commemorations including the march and laying of a wreath at the Ballina cenotaph.
Meanwhile in Alstonville, a group of more than 30 students and staff from the broader EAC community marched together proudly wearing the medals of their ancestors and representing the College.
Thank you to all the students and staff who participated, and to their families for their support. Thank you also to the great turn out from our EAC community who attended the marches to encourage our staff and students and show their respect for our ANZACs. Lest we forget.

EAC ALUMNI ABOVE PAR
We are always keen to connect with our alumni and share their news and this week we were delighted to receive word from the parents of Kyle Underwood regarding his recent impressive achievements in both the realms of sport and academia in the United States of America.
Kyle graduated with the class of 2017 and has since moved to the USA to further his studies at Long Island University (LIU) and continue his golfing career. Kyle will soon graduate from LIU with both a Masters of Business Administration and a Masters of Sports Management. These impressive qualifications will no doubt serve Kyle well as he continues to pursue his dreams and achieve the goals he set for himself all those years ago right here at Emmanuel Anglican College.
On the golf course, Kyle is also impressing and was recently named Golfer of the Week by the prestigious Northeast Conference following a great performance at the Shark Invitational held at Brookville. Kyle was one of the first EAC students to participate in our specialised sporting program for elite athletes which provides support to students to both explore their talent while balancing their academic load.
Kyle has remained a proud EAC Alumni and visited the College in January together with other ILU students and friends.
We are proud of Kyle too and wish him all the very best as he continues his incredible journey.

PRAISE FROM PROSPECTIVE EAC FAMILIES
Last term the College hosted an invitation only event for students and their families currently waitlisted for enrolment at EAC. The Open Evening was a great success attended by more than 600 people. Our student tour guides were a popular highlight of the evening showing attendees around the College and sharing their experience as a student of EAC. Teaching staff throughout the College created engaging displays to showcase the opportunities available at EAC and some of our recent achievements. Another great feature of the event was the catering provided by our Hospitality students who prepared and served a delicious array of refreshments to the delight of attendees. Feedback from the event has been universally positive with many attendees taking the time to put their comments in writing, some of which as detailed below.
"I’m just dropping you a line to thank you for last evening’s event. The School grounds and facilities looked fantastic – but what was much more impressive to me was the students and staff of the school who I observed or interacted with during the evening. I am pretty certain that one of these was a young lady (tour guide) who is the primary school captain. I thought she was extraordinary. And every one of your teaching staff with whom I spoke clearly love the place and have very deep pride in it. No wonder you had so many prospective parents turning up!"
"We were very impressed at the presentation of the school, the offerings (curricular and social/emotional), and most importantly the staff, who were highly engaging and well informed. It was obvious why your school is a sought after one in our local area."
"We attended the open night yesterday evening and were so impressed! What a wonderful school, with fantastic facilities and staff.
Our children left very excited at the thought of attending Emmanuel."
"From the students and how they held and conducted themselves to the teachers attentiveness through to the incredible facilities throughout the whole school. It was amazing! We took both our children to have a look through the school and they both can’t stop talking about it. They even said to me after the visit he wants to go to the school with the robots, referring to the Lego robots the students demonstrated to us. Very cute!"
"First, I wanted to say a huge thank you for the excellent Open Night put on by the College last night. I am sure it was a lot of work for you all. It far exceeded our expectations, and we left feeling excited about the potential that the school offers for our family in the future. Apart from the stand-out facilities, which speak for themselves, what stayed with us most was the interactions we had with staff and students. Every single person we encountered was proactive, knowledgeable, approachable and enthusiastic. You cannot ask for a better
recommendation than that."

AROUND THE WORLD WITH EAC
Happy Friday to everyone in the EAC community. There has been plenty happening since our last instalment with our students travelling far and wide over the break. 29 students and staff travelled to Greece and Italy to explore marvels of the ancient world from the Acropolis to the Colosseum, as well as enjoying plenty of traditional food! 15 secondary students and 4 staff spent 8 days on Lizard Island in Far North Queensland, snorkelling on the reef and collecting data on the reef life.
Our students marched in the ANZAC Day parades in Ballina and Alstonville in support of our local communities, paying tribute to the men and women of the area who lost their lives in conflicts and peace keeping missions around the world.
The students’ enjoyment of their surroundings continued when this week the primary and secondary school went to Shelly Beach for the College Cross Country. It was a perfect backdrop for a fun day and some competitive times were established on the course which ran down along Angel Beach and back to Shelly Beach.
Now back to class and Mr Falvey’s class were busy planning their sustainable farms, Mr Pearson’s class examined the cycle of life of frogs and Ms Armstrong’s class were getting competitive with their 6 times tables.
Thanks to Mrs Holmes, the Tutankhamun Roadshow arrived at the College for a two day visit of its artifacts, presentations and multi-media displays, and so begins another ripple of excitement about the learning opportunities that are occurring here at EAC.

CROSS COUNTRY
The weather was kind to us for our postponed EAC Cross Country Championships run at East Ballina on Tuesday. This is the first time the event was run at this location, but after the success of the day, it certainly won't be the last time.
Primary students competed in the morning, and secondary in the afternoon. House spirit was again at the forefront of the event with an abundance of colourful costumes gracing the shores of Shelly and Lighthouse Beaches.
The top 15 students from each event have now qualified for the NCIS Cross Country Championships held at Lindisfarne on Friday 12 May. Families of qualifying students have today received the invite on Parent Lounge and are asked to indicate if their child is intending to compete at NCIS by Monday 8 May to ensure sufficient transport and staffing arrangements.

Excitingly, our 'Read and Relax Zone' in the sunken area of the Library has begun to transform. Custom shelves designed to engage students with various titles have been installed and the space is now more efficient and enjoyable. Narnia inspired paintings, donated to the Library by a very generous EAC family who have asked to remain anonymous, have been hung.
New books, eBooks and audiobooks are always being added to the Library. The Library has recently purchased all the picture books nominated for Picture Book of the Year by the Children’s Book Council of Australia - as well as many other popular titles. Students are encouraged to browse the displays in the Library, check out titles available on ePlatform and search the Library Catalogue online to discover and borrow these amazing and beautiful books.
On Wednesday 24 May (Week 5), at around 11am, children from all around Australia and from neighbouring countries will be listening to the same story at the same time for National Simultaneous Storytime. This year’s story is The Speedy Sloth by Rebecca Young. The ELC, Kindy, Year 1 and Year 2 will be coming to the Library to hear the story. Years 3 and up will participate in their classrooms. Keep an eye out for activities leading up to this wonderful event.

8 THINGS TO TELL YOUR CHILDREN EVERY DAY
- "I love you"
Knowing they are loved no matter what .. is crucial. - "You are amazing"
This will create a deep positive self belief from an early age. - "Be kind to other people"
It is so important that your children learn kindness and know that they learn through watching your actions too. - "That’s your decision"
Teach them to be independent and show them life has rules and consequences. - "Tell me about your day"
An open question enables children to answer with greater words – and knowing that you are interested in them, makes them feels secure. - "Manners please"
Manners, so important from a young age, is something they should carry through to adulthood. - "Be grateful for what you have"
By you, as parents and carers, showing that you are grateful for what you have, you pass this essential attitude on to your children. - "Think about what would you like to do"
Teaching them to make decisions when they are young is good and shows that compromise needs to happen.

AND SUDDENLY IT'S MAY!
It's been a busy and exciting start to Term 2!
We have now started our sports program with Ms Wendy Britton. This program will run every Wednesday and focus on building gross motor skills, teamwork and to take on new challenges.
We have also now started our weekly visits to the Library. Each week Ms Jordan reads us a story and we are given the opportunity to sit and read all the wonderful books we have in the Library.
We have enjoyed welcoming everyone back from the holiday period and children having fun with their friends.
For all the ACHC families - the ACHC educators are Ms Fiona Martin and Bethany Ferguson. Bethany Ferguson has recently accepted the position of the ACHC Coordinator, which is very exciting for all the children who use the ACHC and Vacation Program.

BIG SCHOOL BUDDIES
One of the key features of our Early Learning Centre is our seamless link with the College or 'Big School'. Our children benefit from a range of experiences that introduce them to the world of primary school and beyond, in exciting yet manageable steps. This week our ELCers enjoyed an adventure to the Joan Pickup Library for a very special story time with the Year 5 Library Monitors. For our pre-kindy students who will be transitioning to Kindergarten in 2024, these same Year 5 students will be their 'Buddies' next year. 'Buddies' is a program that links Year 6 students with Kindergarten students and helps foster support, a sense of belonging and comradery across all year levels of the College.

EAC MOVES BACK TO EAST BALLINA
Pardon the clickbait above, but over the past week all members of the EAC student body have been in close proximity to our original Gunundi site, with both our Year 6 Leadership Day and the School Cross Country being held in East Ballina. Taking our learning experiences out of the classroom and into the wonderful surrounds that we are blessed with in the Northern Rivers provided the students with the perfect backdrop to thrive.
I must say how proud I was of all the students who competed in the Cross Country. For our youngest members to run 2km over the sand, up the stairs, over the headland and down the straight was a testament to the resilience and perseverance that our EAC kids possess. Just to finish such a race is an achievement, let alone finish in the top 15 to go on to represent at the NCIS level.
On the day, the SRC raised $250 by selling Zooper Doopers and we have matched that as a College to donate a total of $500 to the Ballina Region for Refugees support group. This group is close to our hearts here in the Primary. Our Stage 3 students, as part of their Integrated Learning focus in Term 1, were treated to a visit by Isabelle Borelli, Vice President of Ballina Region for Refugees (BR4F). Isabelle immersed the students in the story of a Syrian family's journey to Ocean Shores and highlighted the importance of community support in the success of the organisation's initiatives. Inspired by Isabelle's visit and many other stories from their learning last term, the SRC students decided to run a fundraiser at the Cross Country and they and the red flushed face runners thank you for your support!
Our Year 6 Leadership Day was also held at the East Ballina Surf club last week. Mr Dan Walsh, Wellbeing Leader for Years 4-6, organised a day full of opportunities for our Year 6 students to continue to develop their leadership skills. Rev Greg Ezzy was on hand to speak to the students about the history and traditions of the College, highlighting the great servant leadership that has shaped EAC over the past 25 years. Our Year 10 students shared their experiences of leadership over their journey and spent time bonding and playing games with the Year 6 students. Mr Walsh took his groups through the expectations of our Year 6 students in their upcoming role as Peer Support Leaders, whilst I spoke with the students at the site of the Ballina Lighthouse about how we can use the metaphor of a lighthouse to help us shape our experience as a leader. At one moment my teaching was interrupted by a pod of dolphins and a fleet of passing RAAF fighter jets. Who can or would want to compete with that?
This week wrapped up with our Years 3 – 6 students competing in the Interhouse Touch Football competition. Admittedly, there was no ocean backdrop for this one, though it was still some friendly competition between our Houses to further enhance their skills and abilities.
Next Wednesday 10 May we welcome the team from Variety for our annual Just Like You workshops.
I hope for all of our students that Term 2 has been a wonderful start to the next quarter in this year’s learning journey!

YEAR 6 PEER SUPPORT TRAINING DAY
All of our Year 6 students are considered leaders at EAC with the responsibility of acting as role models for our younger students. In addition to leading by personal example, Year 6 students will be facilitating Peer Support groups throughout Term 2.
Peer Support groups are small groups of 8 to 10 children from across all year levels in the primary school. The groups meet every Friday during Term 2 to complete a variety of activities designed to develop the values and skills that enable all students to use their talents to benefit others.
This year's Peer Support focus will be 'Promoting Harmony'.
Promoting Harmony will focus on developing the following skills:
- Values Clarification
- Relationship Building
- Assertiveness
- Decision Making
EAC's Peer Support program develops positive relationships amongst students as well as between teachers and, more generally, a sense of positive wellbeing throughout Primary. The program helps our primary students develop the skills and abilities to support their interpersonal relationship skills now and into the future.

WELLBEING DURING TERM 2
During Wellbeing lessons this Term, each year group will be focussing on different topics to support their Social and Emotional Learning and support them to become informed citizens.
Below is an outline of what each year group will cover this Term.
Year 7: Students will continue the peer support program and be supported by the Year 11 student leaders in their Houses.
Year 8: Students will learn some important skills to support them in developing their social and emotional skills as well as the importance of building resilience and learn important strategies for coping with adversity, combating a fear of failure and improving mindfulness.
Year 9: Students are spending the first few weeks preparing for camps, learning valuable skills such as putting up tents, orientating a map and the importance of team building. Throughout the Term, students will continue to cook for the Soup Kitchen as their community service. They will then spend time developing a growth mindset and learning a new skill.
Year 10: Career Pathways and focusing on areas of interest will begin the Term, before students will revise the importance of Social Media and the law.
Year 11: Students will continue to work with Year 7 on the peer support program for the Term.
Year 12: Students are navigating the process for applying for university and pathways beyond school. They will then start to learn about the importance of budgeting and what to consider if they move out of home to go to university.

Uniform
As we move into the cooler months of the year, it is important to be reminded of the importance of wearing full uniform to school each day. The College uniform not only promotes a sense of identity within the College community. It is a symbol to the broader community of who we ware and what we believe. If for some reason your child can not wear uniform it is important that they bring a note and give it to their Pastoral Care Teacher. They will then receive a Uniform Pass for the day.
EAC uniform expectations are available on the College website HERE.
LIZARD ISLAND TOUR
Fifteen students from Years 10, 11 and 12 became part of the EAC Lizard Island Alumni over the holidays. On this third College Tour to the Lizard Island Research Station (270km North East of Cairns), students were immersed for 7 days in a live, educational experience in coral reef Science on the Great Barrier Reef.
Daily lectures, given by Dr Jacob who was a coral reef researcher at Lizard Island prior to becoming a teacher, were followed by a boat trip to various locations around the Island. On snorkel, students would observe the incredible diversity that lies beneath the most beautiful, pristine blue waters.
After a full day out, usually around 4 hours in the water, students would work through their footage and photos to identify, often to species level, the organisms they had seen. A game of beach volleyball at sunset would follow with a nutritious dinner prepared by students and staff ready to do it all again the next day.
As the week progressed, students became familiar with the different families of fish and corals as well as the fascinating interactions that occur between them. Students were lucky to meet and learn from international researchers doing their PhDs or Post-Doctoral Research on projects such as cleaner wrasse cognition, nocturnal interactions on the reef, and cooperative hunting between octopuses and different species of fish.
All students returned with an increased awareness of the beauty, as well as the fragility, of the remarkable coral reef ecosystem that is Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
Students interested in attending in 2024 should keep an out for the Expression of Interest letter coming out later in the year.

INSPIRED BY REAL LIFE EVENTS
Last week our Year 12 Business Studies students were given the incredible opportunity to participate in a dynamic session on real world marketing techniques and business strategy facilitated by Mr Paul Kopplemen, Group CFO of global advertising and PR powerhouse, Dentsu.
Dentsu is currently the largest advertising agency in Japan and the fifth largest advertising agency network in the world in terms of worldwide revenues. They operate in 143 markets around the globe and have a labour force of over 65,000 people. Dentsu helps brands predict and plan for disruptive future opportunities and create new paths to growth in the sustainable economy. They focus on consumer intelligence to make insight a reality that moves businesses forward. Some of their major clients are Target, L’Oréal, Coopers, Sonos, Jaguar Land Rover, LVMH, Kao Corporation and Netflix.
Paul is a respected member of the finance community, known for his commercial acumen and strong track record of delivering business growth with his high-performance team. He has held leadership positions in several global companies in banking, technology and media and entertainment with a strong global outlook having worked in Europe and Asia Pacific.
In essence, the opportunity for our Year 12s to connect with such an experienced and esteemed professional was an incredible privilege EAC is proud to have provided.
In his entertaining talk to the students, Paul spoke of the need to develop your own ‘brand’ as a jobseeker and employee and the importance of changing jobs to ‘grow your brand’ in the labour market. His anecdotes were also enjoyed by the students. Paul spoke of the significance of sustainability and its role in driving consumer choice. Businesses must radically reimagine marketing by making sustainability an organising principle to unleash innovation and momentum in companies.
The students were engaged, enthusiastic, polite and professional.
Thank you once again to Paul for being so generous with his time and knowledge.

TECHNOLOGY TRIUMPHS
Throughout last Term in Year 9 Information Software and Technology, students delved into the diverse world of Digital Media, learning to design, produce and assess various media types. The course included practical tasks such as crafting logos with Adobe Illustrator, refining photos using Adobe Photoshop, creating audio tracks with LMMS, and animating with Adobe Animate. I extend heartfelt congratulations to all students who have completed their outstanding digital media assessments. Your hard work, commitment and dedication to the project is admirable, and I hope you take pride in the valuable skills you have learned. Keep up the excellent work!
I am now thrilled to introduce a little virtual reality investigation that will stimulate students’ interest and provide an exciting lead-in to our next topic: Artificial Intelligence, Simulation, and Modelling. Get ready to explore a world of possibilities with cutting-edge technology, and let's embark on a journey of discovery together!

ANCIENT HISTORY BOUGHT TO LIFE
This week our Year 8 History students took part in an all day History incursion with the arrival of the Tutankhamun Roadshow at the
College. The Roadshow is a museum quality, archaeology exhibition encased in a very large semi trailer. It looked very impressive parked
outside The Lindsay Walker Centre and the students really had fun moving through the truck and being immersed in the fully sensory
experience.
'Classrooms' were set up in The Lindsay Walker Centre where our Year 8 History teachers ran sessions on a variety of topics that provided a wonderful opportunity for students to engage in hands-on activities as well as undertake a site study (a mobile one!).
A big thanks to our History teachers as well as the staff from The Lindsay Walker Centre for setting up the space. Year 8 were very engaged for the whole day and represented the College well.
This was a fantastic example of learning in action and one that the students (and staff) will long remember!
