I am absolutely delighted to announce that Rev Sally Miller has confirmed that she will move to the full time position of College Chaplain in 2019. Sally is currently working part time at EAC as she holds a significant position in the Diocese, working with the other four Anglican schools. Sally has so many gifts and we are greatly blessed to have her leading the faith life of our community.
Our whole College assembly this week was an incredible celebration of the amazing talents of a significant number of students who have represented the College over the last three weeks and achieved much success.
We were celebrating the wonderful success of our NCIS Athletics squad which included EAC winning the Primary Athletics Championships and finishing third out of 14 schools in the Secondary Athletic Championships. The College had a number of Age Champions and Runners Up. We also set a number of competition records including two on the 4 x 100 relays. Most importantly, the students were commended for their excellent behaviour, cooperation and sportsmanship. Our largest contingent ever will now represent NCIS at the NSW CIS Championships early next month.
We also acknowledged the outstanding achievement of our Tournament of the Minds (TOM) teams. Two Primary and three Secondary teams have been busily preparing for the challenge for the last 6 weeks and participated in competition on Sunday at Kingcliffe. All of the students presented their various challenges with great enthusiasm, highlighting their creative and innovative thinking as they responded to the various components of the tournament. Congratulations to two of our Secondary teams who were the winners of their division and now progress to the state finals in Sydney.
During the assembly we also recognised the amazing achievements of our Primary and Secondary Concert Bands. The bands competed in the Gold Coast Eisteddfod for the first time last week with both Bands finishING just outside the top three and being awardED Highly Commended with Honours. There were 30 schools involved in the competition, many having been competing at this level for more than 30 years. Congratulations to all involved.
We also congratulated a significant number of Gold and Silver Award recipients and acknowledged the incredible individual achievements of Khalani Franklin (Year 5) and Hayley Oakes (Year 9) who represented the College at the Australian Championship in their respective fields of hockey and mountain biking in the last few weeks.
It was a remarkable assembly that highlighted both the amazing talents of our students and also the dedication and skill of the EAC staff who generously give their time to support students to achieve at their best whether it be academically, in sport, through service and citizenship, culturally or in the arts.
The College Art Show takes place this Thursday evening and our annual Book Parade and Grandparents Day celebration will be held on Friday. I invite all our families to join with us for these wonderful community events.

Off the Deputy's Desk
Congratulations to all of our Tournament of Minds students who represented the College so admirably on Sunday at the Regional Challenge at Kingscliff. Our Primary teams unfortunately were just short of a place but performed really well. Our Secondary teams performed with passion and purpose and were both successful in winning their divisions. This means that the secondary teams now travel to Sydney in 2 weeks to compete at the NSW State Championships at the University of New South Wales.

Don’t forget that we are still collecting donations of toiletries and non-food items to prepare to send to the farmers struggling with the drought out in western areas. Please be generous and get your secondary students to bring in their donations over the next 3 weeks. The primary students are having a mufti day where they will be raising money for drought relief.
On Thursday 13 September the Secondary SRC will be running the Secondary Social under the theme of Cowgirls and Cowboys. This promises to be a great night and all profits raised will go to buy a bale. Whilst we are on the topic of service please don’t forget that St Mary’s Anglican Church is looking for student volunteers to assist at the Big Blue Fete on Saturday 8 September.
NAPLAN is in the news again with results being released this week and I would urge our students and parents to keep NAPLAN results in perspective and remember the following key pieces of information.
- NAPLAN is a point in time test and the results are a snapshot of a student’s performance and should not be used to judge the potential of individual student
- The tests are based on literacy and numeracy and do not assess critical and creative thinking
- Results form only one piece of the triangle of data that can be collected about a student’s academic progress. The other two being school reporting data and results of other benchmarking tests, such as ICAS.
- Positive NAPLAN results are a good thing but these results should not be manipulated to create league tables of results and nor should they be the only means to judge the effectiveness of a school’s educational program
I look forward to spending some time analysing our results but like all things we need to keep NAPLAN in perspective and use the data to enhance teaching and learning rather than to just crunch numbers.
Finally, I look forward to visiting the College Art Show this Thursday and having the opportunity to view the creative talents of our students across all year levels of the College. The importance of the Arts in assisting students to develop their creativity and expression is a vital element of a balanced and holistic education. To this end I thank Mr Raguse for his work with the Art Show and hope that a great night is enjoyed by all who visit.

Early Learning Centre News
At the Early Learning Centre we ask children to stop, be still and listen to the world. We promote exploration of the natural environment and delight in the discoveries we find. One of these blissful discoveries has been a nest in the tip of the branches of our poinciana tree. A family of Noisy Minors have decided to reside among the noisy hustle and bustle of preschool. We wondered if it might be due to the food scraps we leave behind after one of the parent Noisy Minors bravely walked about our group during afternoon tea picking up small bits of food and flying back to the nest.Natasha Livock (BA PrimEd, Grad.Cert. Primary Assembly 4B
During Japanese lessons, 4B have been learning to sing several Japanese songs. We were very proud to perform two of these songs at the Primary Assembly on Tuesday. Our class know that successful people are always persistent. We used persistence when learning these songs by remaining focused, trying our best and never giving up. When we are investigating scientific topics, everyone in 4B uses flexible thinking and questioning to discover new ideas and concepts.
Drought Appeal for Farmers
Music Notes
Last week the Senior Primary Concert Band and the Secondary Concert Band competed at the Gold Coast Eisteddfod for the first time. This was an amazing opportunity for them to experience a larger venue and a higher level of competition. The students were brimming with excitement and the Secondary Band students were dressed smartly in their new band t-shirts. Both bands performed with confidence, expression and precision, achieving outstanding results.
The Secondary Concert Band competed against very strong competition and was awarded Highly Commendable with Honours. This was an excellent result for a first time performance at the Eisteddfod. The Senior Primary Concert Band competed in the A Grade section and was awarded Very Highly Commendable with Honours. This placed the band in the top five primary bands at the Eisteddfod. A fantastic performance.

Write a Book in a Day
The Write a Book in a Day competition was back again this year, bigger than ever! 53 students took part in the day which began at 8 am and concluded at 8 pm. Working in groups, the students wrote, illustrated and edited a 4000-5000 word original children’s book to be given to sick children in hospitals around Australia. All money raised was donated to the Kid’s Cancer Project.
Once again, I was very impressed by the way in which the students collaborated together, used technology, shared ideas and harnessed their creativity for such a great cause. A big thanks to all students involved, as well as, to Fiona Wilson-Jones for her assistance and support on the day.

A reminder that the College Art Show will take place on the evening of Thursday 30 August commencing at 6.00pm. It is always a wonderful showcase of the artistic talent of our students and I encourage you to join us and celebrate their talents. Thanks to the Friends of EAC and our Hospitality students who will provide refreshments and nibbles for all our guests.
Grandparents Day and the Book Parade will take place on Friday 31 August commencing at 9.30 am with the parade. Following the parade, there will be opportunity to visit classrooms and enjoy a morning tea coordinated by the wonderful ‘Friends of EAC’. I hope you can join us for the celebration.

Noodle Box from “Noodle Box” at Ballina Fair, will be available from the canteen next Tuesday, 4 september. If you would like to order Noodle Box for your child’s lunch next Tuesday please complete the order form then attach your order to a paper bag with your payment enclosed. This should then be put in the canteen basket on Monday morning, 3 September . Order forms will be sent home but are also available at the canteen, office or online.

IT’S ON AGAIN
Yes it’s that time of the year again when the primary students are rewarded for making good food choices. The campaign will run for three (3) weeks commencing on Monday 3rd September and finishing on Friday 21st September.
Students are required to make a good choice of fresh fruit or vegetables for fruit time/recess or lunch (MAX one a day). It MUST be fresh not fruit sticks, dried fruit etc.
Each student is rewarded for making a fresh fruit or vegetable choice. Students will receive a token card to fill and will receive stickers and a token for each fresh fruit or vegetable choice they make (1 per day max). This year students will receive a bonus sticker for every piece of fruit that they purchase from the canteen (.70c).
Students will then bring their completed token card (3 tokens) to the canteen to receive a minor prize. Taken cards will then be forwarded to Sydney Markets to participate in the major draw.
