Band Program

Emmanuel Anglican College has an extensive Music Program that promotes students musical education in both curricular and extra-curricular music. The College’s Concert Band Program provides opportunities for experienced musicians as well as providing an opportunity for beginners to enjoy music.

A College’s band program offers a platform to bring together students who are learning an instrument to learn and share the wonderful experience of playing and performing. This makes learning effective and enjoyable because the experience is shared by a group of students rather than being done individually, creating a dynamic environment in which to learn. Students also learn to function and perform as a team. Participants in the College Band Program have regular opportunity to perform in College, Community and Eisteddfod Events.

Studies have found that there is a link between music instruction and academic achievement. Research also shows that music students are better equipped to comprehend mathematical and scientific concepts. This is highlighted in a fabulous YouTube clip titled How Playing an Instrument Benefits Your Brain.

Year 3 Development Concert Band

The Year 3 Development Concert Band provides beginner brass, woodwind and percussion students with a band experience to prepare them for the Primary Concert Band. Students participating in the Development Concert Band attend Development Band Rehearsals as part of their Year 3 Music Program. Students learn the foundations of musical notation, instrumental skills and ensemble awareness and rehearse repertoire appropriate to the student’s current level of musical proficiency.

Students participating in the Development Concert Band Program are provided with an instrument, receive a 30 minute group lesson each week from one of the College’s instrumental tutors and participate in a band rehearsal.

Primary Concert Band

Primary students who learn percussion, brass or woodwind instruments are encouraged to join the Primary Concert Band. While this is not an auditioned band, students need to be technically competent on their instrument and be able to read simple musical notation. Such competency usually requires approximately one year of tuition prior to joining and is a natural progression for students involved in the Development Concert Band.

The Primary Concert Band performs wind compositions, marches and concert arrangements of popular tunes. The Primary Concert Band performs regularly at College assemblies, events and celebrations, as well as eisteddfods and performances around the community.

The Primary Concert Band rehearses on Wednesday mornings at 8am. Students are expected to arrive at 7.45am to set up and warm up prior to the commencement of the rehearsal.

Secondary Concert Band

Secondary Students who learn percussion, brass or woodwind instruments are encouraged to join the Secondary Concert Band. Year 6 students are invited to be part of the Secondary Concert Band as an enrichment opportunity provided to them.

The Secondary Concert Band rehearses on Thursday mornings at 8am. Students are expected to arrive at 7.45am to set up and warm up prior to the commencement of the rehearsal.
